About Us

Cornwall Search and Rescue Team (CSRT) is a registered charity that provides a search and rescue service across inland Cornwall. We respond to around 40-60 incidents each year and have 45 team members who are all volunteers and based across the county, available 24/7 for call outs.

Most of our call outs are searches in rural countryside and the moors, working closely with the police and other local search and rescue teams to locate, stabilise and evacuate missing people. In addition to the traditional image of missing walkers, many of these searches are actually for confused elderly or young people, and persons who may cause harm to themselves. We also have a search and rescue dog team that regularly gets called to assist our neighbouring teams on Dartmoor and Exmoor.

By having all of this specialist training, equipment and vehicles we also get called to respond to those who need help from the remoter parts of the county, including moorland and mineshafts. In these circumstances, the ambulance service and fire and rescue service can call us at any time to assist with these casualty evacuations.

We are one of the 56 voluntary and highly trained mountain rescue teams that operate around the country, and regularly use of all these skills whether it be whilst rescuing someone in atrocious weather on the moors, looking for an elderly neighbour, attending a civil emergency or when providing assistance to other teams.

We don't get any central funding and all of our members are volunteers meaning that all of the £15,000 required to keep the team running each year must come from voluntary donations.

Exmoor SRT base opening

Five team members travelled up to Exmoor SRT on 2nd May 2011, National Cave and Mountain Rescue Awareness Day, to congratulate them on the opening of their new search and rescue team base in South Molton.

The event was supported by the surrounding community and local dignitaries, with the base being officially opened by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. The day marked the end of months of hard work in planning and preparations, and the result is an outstanding, modern and functional facility which the team should be proud of.

Well done to Exmoor team.
